From Lab Bench to Journal Cover: HoloMonitor Images Featured on Advanced Biology

26 March 2025

We are proud to share a success story for our customers, our valued partner Phase Holographic Imaging (PHI) and Altium: cellular images acquired using the HoloMonitor® M4 have been featured on the cover of Advanced Biology, Volume 9, Issue 2 (February 2025).

The featured research, led by Dr. Besa Xhabija and co-authors, explores critical insights into melanoma progression using digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and quantitative phase imaging (QPI). These technologies empower label-free, live-cell analysis without altering cells' natural state.

A Closer Look at the Study

The study compares normal human melanocytes to the SK-MEL-28 melanoma cell line, highlighting profound differences in:

  • Cell shape and size
  • Optical thickness and internal structure
  • Surface roughness and texture homogeneity
  • Migration patterns and dynamic behavior

Advanced data analysis tools, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE), were used to uncover morphological and behavioral signatures unique to melanoma cells. These distinctions are critical for identifying potential biomarkers and advancing non-invasive diagnostics and personalized therapies for melanoma.

Why This Matters

This work underscores the power of label-free live-cell imaging and advanced quantitative analysis in cancer research. It also reaffirms the value of the HoloMonitor system in oncology workflows—enabling researchers to visualize, quantify, and analyze cellular behavior over time, with minimal sample preparation and no need for staining.  For us at Altium International, this publication is more than just a customer success, it’s a validation of our mission to support the life science community with technologies that enable deeper insight, more precise results, and impactful science.

Congratulations to the Team

We congratulate Dr. Xhabija and her team on this achievement. We’re proud to have contributed to bringing innovations like HoloMonitor® M4 to researchers across the region.
